We had our wonderful Christmas program on Dec. 2, 2015. Everyone was dressed to impress. The students did their best and sang beautifully! We were wondering if they were going to be shy, but many of them sang loudly and were not afraid to stand on stage and perform. We sang, "Away in the Manger" and the "The Day Before Christmas." It was a joyous time! Here are some precious photos from backstage!

This month in Bible, we have been focusing on the birth of Jesus Christ. Our memory verse is adapted from 1 John 4:10 "God loved us and sent His Son." And Matthew 1:21 "You shall call his name Jesus." One of my favorite Bible verses is John 3:16. It says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have eternal life." It is our hope to bring this GOOD NEWS to all people. Jesus' birth is the true meaning of Christmas. This month during our Bible Time, we have happily been doing "Bible Theatre!" The students enjoy watching the show of their own peers, as they dress up as the characters in the Bible story. They do their best to act out their parts and even repeat a few lines! The audience also participated as the Choir of Angels and sang, "Glory to God in the Highest!" It has been a wonderful way to bring this beautiful Christmas story to life, and we hope the children will remember it for a very long time. If you would like to watch it at home, here is a video of The Beginner's Bible, "The Story of the Nativity" ~ The birth of God's son, Jesus Christ. CHRISTMAS SONGSThe children LOVE singing! We have learned a lot of Christmas songs! Here are the lyrics if you want to sing them at home. Away in the Manger 1. Away in the manger, no crib for a bed. The little Lord Jesus, lay down His sweet head. The stars in the sky look down where he laid. The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay! 2. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes. But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love you, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, and stay by my cradle 'till morning is nigh! Glory to God in the Highest Glory to God in the highest (clap 2x) Glory to God in the highest heavens Glory to God in the highest (clap once) and peace to me of goodwill! Go Tell it on the Mountain Go tell it on the mountains, over the hills and everywhere Go tell it on the mountains, that Jesus Christ is born. He is the King of Kings He is the King of kings, He is the Lord of lords His name is Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus (clap 2x inbetween Jesus) Oh, He is the King! O Hoshi ga Hikari 1. O hoshi ga hikaru, pika pika Fushigi ni akaru pika pika Naniga naniga aru no ka? O hoshi ga hikaru, pika pika! 2. Rakuda ga to-o-ru, kapo kapo Sabaku nohara o kapo kapo Doko e doko e iku no ka? Rakuda go to-o-ru kapo kapo! (Quick translation: Why are the stars shining? *pika is the sound it makes. Where are camels going? *kapo is the sound of the camels walking.) Christmas Photos! We were asked to come to the office and hang Angel ornaments on the office Christmas tree. We sang, "Away in the Manger" for the OCSI office staff, then lined up to hang precious glass Angels. After school, some of the families participated in a Gingerbread House fundraiser for the Phillipines mission team. It will be an amazing Christmas season! Enjoy the photos!
AppleSauceIt has been such a busy month, that I decided to post a bunch of photos from our daily class activities. After we visited the sweet potato farm, we talked about how plants grow, and in the next few days made applesauce! This was my favorite activity because it was so simple to do and it's a yummy way to learn procedural writing- write about how to do something! The students practiced safety in preparing the apples. We washed them, and had each child practice peeling it, with the help of the teacher, of course. We then used a nifty apple corer to take out our apple core. Then each student, under close supervision, practiced cutting apple slices with a butter knife. I was pleased to see that they were being very careful and that each student concentrated really hard. It's fair enough to say that some of them needed more guidance than others, as one boy tried to cut his apple slice mid-air. Another funny story is about one boy who asked while cutting his apples, "May I have a bite...please?" So I gave in and said, "Sure, just one small piece." Soon enough, I noticed his apple pieces got smaller and smaller, and were disappearing off his plate! I can't blame him, apples are delicious! We placed our cut apple pieces into the rice cooker, yes a rice cooker! Then we turned on the button and waited! Viola! Mix it and you have natural tasty applesauce. It's very easy to make at home, please try it! ThanksgivingWe started reading books about Thanksgiving, the Pilgrims and Native Americans, the voyage over to America, and also funny stories about Turkeys. We celebrated Thanksgiving by having a class discussion about things we are thankful for. We created a list and students drew some pictures about what they are thankful for. They also wrote some things on their turkey feathers, decorated a little milk carton to make a thanksgiving box, and created some Thanksgiving headbands and bonnets. Thank you, Lord, for such wonderful little Kindergarteners! It's never too early to be a missionary for Jesus and share the love of God with others. These students graciously shared their joy and gifts to the elderly at Yomitan no Sato. We began with a short welcome, a prayer, then students joyfully sang songs about love, joy, walking with Jesus, and praises to the Lord. After some singing, we presented our gift basket of fruits to the elderly home. Thank you so much for your generous donations of fruit to bless others. We had an overflowing box! So much, that we had to carry a few boxes! :) The children then moved around all the grandma's and grandpa's in wheelchairs and presented them with handmade bead necklaces and handprint paper flowers. The children were a little timid, but it did not stop them from sharing their gifts. We were very proud of them and their desire to give back to the community and show love to others.
Dig! Dig! Dig! The students had a terrific time digging for sweet potatoes. This was a our first field trip for the school year, and they were very excited! It was great to see the students who love working hard and don't mind getting a little dirty. Many of them had tons of energy and dug from hole to hole. I think the funniest thing was when a tired student looked around and said, "I think we have enough potatoes." She had enough of the manual labor. I chuckled and told her that she could take a break. The students came back to enjoy a book called "The Very Big Potato." Then drew awesome pictures and wrote about their potato farm field trip. We hope you enjoyed eating the sweet potatoes!
